Definition of Unknown Observers

A mystery shopper refers to an unknown observer. An Unknown Observer must be a non-Infection Preventionist staff member and be observing hand hygiene compliance on units other than the unit to which they are permanently assigned. The Unknown Observers task must also be unknown to other staff at the time of the observation. They cannot have a specific interest in the unit they are observing; cannot be an assigned member of the unit team.

Examples

Example 1:
• A Respiratory Therapist that is assigned/dedicated to the SICU and that unit only, could not observe hand hygiene on the SICU unit, but,
• A Respiratory Therapist that is assigned/dedicated to multiple units or the entire hospital could observe hand hygiene on the SICU and other units.

Example 2:
• Float Pool Staff that are permanently assigned to one unit could not observe hand hygiene on the unit they are assigned to, but,
• Float Pool Staff that take assignments on a variety of units throughout the organization could observe hand hygiene on those units.

Example 3:
• Clinical Educators or Clinical Specialists that are assigned/dedicated to two medical units could not observe hand hygiene on those units, but,
• Those same Clinical Educators or Clinical Specialists could observe hand hygiene on other units
throughout the organization
